New medical device decontamination foundation degree  - applicants numbers rise | Aug 08

In all hygiene, decontamination and infection control matters, training is a key priority.  The new Foundation Degree focusing on medical device decontamination introduced by Eastwood Park last year is proving of real value to many within SSD departments.  Twice as many delegates have signed up for the decontamination pathway this October than last year’s intake and they are coming from as far afield as Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

This two-year course is a combination of work-based and distance learning enabling those in full time employment to achieve an academic qualification relevant to their speciality.

The medical device decontamination pathway provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all aspects of decontamination including:  Anatomy and Physiology; Microbiology; Managing Medical Equipment; Decontamination Standards and Quality Assurance.

Sue Peckham, Decontamination Programme Manager at Eastwood Park, and Personal Tutor for the decontamination pathway commented:  “One of the key advantages of this course is that it is ideal for staff that don’t want to give up their job to study full-time.  Study can be managed at the workplace and at home.  Funding is also available in the majority of cases.”

The Foundation Degree decontamination pathway goes beyond Level 3 NVQs and provides a progression route to one or more Honours Degrees, which are also delivered on the same flexible basis.  Intakes are twice a year in October and March.
