Eastwood Park - in partnership with Kingston University and in
association with the Department of Health, Sector Skills Councils,
SEMTA & Skills for Health, the MHRA, IHEEM, IPEM & IDSc - has
developed a work-based Foundation Degree that specifically
addresses the skills shortage and career development issues
in the medical technology sector.

This Foundation Degree enables individuals working in medical
technologies to obtain an appropriate accredited work-based
qualification whilst in full time employment. It is focused on
developing additional skills, knowledge and understanding in
medical technology in the workplace, with intakes in March and
October.

The cost is parallel to other under graduate programmes (in the
region of £3000 - £3500 pa). There may be bursaries available to
delegates via Kingston University. Candidates will also be entitled
to apply for and receive a student loan.

Programme Information

The Foundation Degree in Medical Technologies (FdSc) is a higher
level qualification (Level 5, Intermediate Award) intended for people
employed full time in any of the following three areas:
  • medical equipment
  • decontamination of medical devices
  • medical gas technology

Achievement of the FdSc will allow access to the final year of a
BSc (Hons) programme. As this is a work-based, distance/blended
learning course a variety of approaches to teaching and learning
will be utilised to reflect the academic level, content and outcomes.
Learning takes place predominantly in the work place mainly through
the completion of workbooks, listening to lectures (via Pod casts),
direct practice with supervision by the mentor in the workplace and
through peer group discussions on Study Space (Kingston
University’s Learning Management System).

All students will be allocated a personal tutor for the duration of their
course. Personal tutors will be allocated from a pool of staff including
teaching staff, the course director and projects co-ordinator/lead
assessors. The role of the personal tutor will include advising and
assisting students in the development of knowledge and skills and
providing support in preparation of evidence for inclusion within a
portfolio.

In addition, all students will be allocated a mentor within their specific
area of employment. Individuals fulfilling the role of the mentor will be
selected on the basis of their practical and academic biography.

Practical assessment of students will take place via attendance at a
number of assessment weekends at Eastwood Park throughout the
academic year which would include both a theoretical and practical
revision session in the morning followed by summative practical
assessment in the afternoon.

Students will study both core and pathway specific modules. All
students will study the same core modules but the pathway specific
modules are focused to the pathway that the student has chosen to
study and reflects the differences between these specialist roles.

Modules

This Foundation Degree consists of common mandatory core modules
(some of which are double), which all students must study, as well as pathway specific modules relevant to the student's work role. Details
