STM2 - Large porous load sterilizers - quarterly testing to HTM guidance

4.5 days

Prerequisite to attending the course
A basic knowledge of large porous load sterilizers and steam sterilization. STM1 would be an advantage before attending this course, as it introduces the principles of sterilizer testing.

Accreditation
The course is accredited by the City & Guilds of London Institute.

Who will benefit?
National Health Service staff or contractors required to perform the duties of a Test Person as defined in HTM2010/HTM01-01.

Aim
To enable delegates to carry out the recommended daily, weekly and quarterly testing procedures on large* porous load sterilizers in accordance with HTM2010/HTM01-01 and obtain the City & Guilds of London Institute certificate 229506.

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
  • Describe the decontamination process
  • Explain the relationship between the saturation temperature and pressure of steam
  • Define terms most commonly used in basic microbiology and sterilization
  • Assess possible hazards associated with the use and maintenance of biomedical equipment and describe measures for their minimization
  • State the main responsibilities of key personnel as defined in HTM2010/HTM01-01
  • State safety precautions applicable when maintaining and testing sterilizers
  • Calibrate and use appropriate test equipment
  • Carry out periodic testing
  • Complete test records and correctly interpret the results
* Large porous load sterilizers are those that can accommodate one or more rectangular boxes measuring 300 x 300 x 600mm of volume 54 litres.

What next?
STM3 - Large porous load sterilizers - annual testing & revalidation

Delegates can achieve the Diploma in Sterilizer Testing Technology by achieving the STM1, STM2 and STM3 within 2 years.
