STM1 - Transportable steam sterilizers - annual testing to HTM guidance

Duration
4.5 days

Prerequisite to attending the course
A basic knowledge of transportable steam sterilizers for unwrapped instruments and utensils (type N) would be of advantage.

Accreditation
The course is accredited by the City & Guilds of London Institute.

Who will benefit?
National Health Service staff or contractors required to perform the duties of a Test Person as defined in HTM2010/HTM01-01/HTM01-05.

Aim
To enable delegates to carry out the recommended daily, weekly, quarterly and yearly/revalidation testing procedures on transportable steam sterilizers for unwrapped instruments and utensils (type N), in accordance with HTM2010/HTM01-01 and obtain the City & Guilds of London Institute certificate (229512).

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
  • Describe the decontamination process
  • Explain the relationship between the saturation temperature and pressure of steam
  • Define terms most commonly used in basic microbiology and sterilization
  • Assess possible hazards associated with the use and maintenance of biomedical equipment and describe measures for their minimization
  • State the main responsibilities of key personnel as defined in
    HTM2010/HTM01-01  
  • State safety precautions applicable when maintaining and testing sterilizers
  • Calibrate and use appropriate test equipment
  • Carry out periodic testing
  • Complete test records and correctly interpret the results
  • Produce detailed reports

What next?
Delegates can achieve the Diploma in Sterilizer Testing Technology by achieving the STM1, STM2 and STM3 within 2 years.
