ENCWS - Combined course - authorised/responsible/nominated roles (HTM04 & ACoP L8)

Duration
5 days, Comprises:
ENWS (3 days) Managing legionella in building water systems
ENRA (1 day) Water risk assessment & log book awareness
ENAP (1 day) Legionnaire’s disease – role of authorised/responsible/nominated person
Accreditation
The course is accredited by the City & Guilds of London Institute. An assessment is carried out at the end of the course.
Who will benefit?
All staff involved in the management and operation of building water systems and who may be appointed as Authorised Person, Responsible Person, or Nominated Person for building water systems.
Aim
To enable delegates to apply the relevant statutory instruments and guidance whilst carrying out the duties of the Authorised Person, Responsible Person, Nominated Person for building water systems as set out in the Health and Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8). Delegates will also be able to implement HTM04; The Control of Legionella in Healthcare premises.
Objectives (ENWS)
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
- Discuss medical aspects such as occurrence, ecology and transmission
routes of legionella and other water borne diseases
- Discuss legal requirements by reference to statutory and non-statutory
documents, guidance notes and other relevant guidance
- Identify areas of concern relating to the building water system such as
hot and cold water systems, cooling towers, humidifiers, fire hose reels
and other problematic areas
- Describe system modifications which may be made to resolve areas of concern
- List types of disinfection used to disinfect water systems
- Calculate appropriate quantities for disinfection to achieve PH correction
- Describe methods of sampling and testing of water, i.e. T.V.C. dip slides,
legionella sampling
- Describe a risk assessment, maintain a logbook and use a method of
recording information that will comply with current legal methods
Objectives (ENRA)
In addition to ENWS, delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
- Identify and evaluate the area of risk in relation to water safety
- Discuss the engineering implementation of cold and hot water system,
aerosol generating equipment, hydrotherapy and swimming pools,
cooling tower, air- conditioning systems, pipework humidifier, fire fighting
equipment, etc
- Describe the format and layout of the written report
- Draw a schematic diagram of the building water system
Objectives (ENAP)
In addition to ENWS and ENRA, delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
- Describe the responsibilities of the Authorised Person, Responsible
Person, Nominated Person
- Implement the legal requirements of the Authorised Person, Responsible
Person, Nominated Person as stated in HTM 04 and ACoP L8
- Employ and supervise consultants and contractors
- Describe the function of ‘in house’ maintenance staff in relation to water
systems’ safety
- Assess the efficiency of the system records
- Assess sampling and record-keeping procedures
