Work-based NVQ Level 3 in Health

Decontamination Pathway

cleaning | disinfection | inspection | packaging
sterilisation | transportation | storage

Eastwood Park - in association with the Department of Health; the
Sector Skills Council Skills for Health; the Institute of Decontamination Sciences; City & Guilds and the Learning & Skills Council - offers this
work-based qualification that specifically addresses the skills shortages
and career development issues in healthcare organisations involved
with the decontamination of surgical instruments.

The NVQ enables individuals working in these organisations to obtain
an appropriate accreditation proving competence in the roles they are
undertaking. It also focuses on developing additional skills, knowledge
and understanding of all aspects of the decontamination cycle.

The qualification can be started at any time of the year.

Programme Information

All candidates are allocated an assessor who will guide and help them through the evidence gathering and assessment process. The assessor
will also discuss and support the candidates with whatever training
needs they have throughout the life of the NVQ. This may include:

  • Related legislation
  • Health & Safety Policies & Procedures
  • Codes of Practice [eg HTM 01]
  • Infection control guidelines
  • Clean room specifications
  • Use of protective equipment

Units

Candidates need to complete 10 units to achieve the full NVQ, selected from three tables shown here. Two units need to be chosen from each
of the first and second tables and all units are mandatory in the third
table.

  • Units in bold reflect units chosen by the great majority of our
    candidates.
  • Competences are from the LANTRA National Occupational
    Standards7 CU.

  • If GEN12 and GEN13 are chosen together, they count as one unit.

Entry Qualifications
There is no pre-requisite to enrolling for an NVQ programme,
however, it is required that the candidate is presently working
in a decontamination role and has a contract of employment.

It is likely that most candidates who are working in England will be
eligible for funding; the level of funding is dependent on the
qualification(s) already held by each candidate who applies.

Enrolling Process
In the first instance applicants need to approach their line manager
to express an interest; who will, in turn, contact Eastwood Park. The
relevant forms are then sent directly to each candidate. Once
applications have been processed and accepted, the applicant's
manager is advised of the funding status for each candidate.
Candidate packs are then sent out and inductions are arranged in
the workplace.
