Aim
To provide a working knowledge of ventilators used in theatres, ITU and special care baby units.

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
- Describe the basic physiology of the lungs and the effects of positive pressure ventilation on the body.
- Differentiate between different ways of supplying gases to a ventilator and describe characteristics of blenders and medical gas hoses.
- Describe the mechanical principles of patient ventilation.
- Name a number of theatre, ITU, SCBU and transport ventilators, differentiate between the types, briefly explain their function and be aware of their typical maintenance requirements.
- Define a list of physical and biological safety precautions that need to be observed when working with ventilators.

What Next
This course will provide the underpinning knowledge and skills to undertake manufacturer training courses on specific ventilation equipment.
