Servicing Physiological and Infusion Equipment | SPMIE

Who will benefit?
All staff involved in the maintenance and servicing of medical electronic equipment who wish to achieve the Engineering Maintenance Level 3 S/NVQ via the Servicing Medical Equipment Pathway. This unit addresses infusion devices, dialysis machines and a range of medical electrical equipment found in maternity units and special care baby units. It will therefore be a useful option for a large proportion of hospital employed medical engineering staff.

Aim
To provide the underpinning knowledge required in order to safely and competently carry out servicing activities on a range of medical electronic equipment and to provide practical experience of direct relevance to the Servicing Physiological Monitoring and Infusion Equipment S/NVQ (unit number 64).

Course Content

  • Infusion devices, management, testing and applications
  • Safe use of medical gases with medical equipment
  • Nursing incubators, radiant warmers and phototherapy devices
  • Apnoea monitoring
  • Foetal monitoring techniques and devices
  • Dialysis machines


Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:

  • Identify the requirements for the safe management of infusion devices
  • Work safely with medical equipment that is connected to medical gas supplies
  • Describe the principles of operation and applications of a range of medical electronic equipment.
  • Apply appropriate techniques for functional testing, calibration, fault finding and scheduled servicing of a range of medical electronic devices

Accreditation
This course has been specifically designed to provide underpinning knowledge and practical experience required for the National Occupational Standard in Servicing Cardiovascular Equipment (unit 64). Candidates will also gain knowledge understanding and experience to help them meet the requirements of the core and pathway specific mandatory units for the Engineering Maintenance S/NVQ.
