Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector | PTLLS

Who will benefit?
If you are delivering any form of teaching / training, you need to have the skills and knowledge to enable the learners to learn in the most appropriate way, for them to meet the objectives and their individual learning needs. It is also important that you gain appropriate recognition for your skills and knowledge via accreditation of a nationally approved award, leading to obtaining a ‘licence to practice’.
There are now new Initial Teacher Training (ITT) qualifications that fit this remit and are THE national qualifications that all unqualified staff really need to be working towards, especially if you are delivering learning linked to government funding (mandatory for the latter and planned to be imposed across all provision by 2010).

What are these ITT qualifications?
There are 3 key qualifications; each contains unit(s), levels and credits. Those units in the lower levels are also within the higher ones, so you build up credits as you learn.

The Award Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector (PTLLS)
Is the initial Award for those new entrants or unqualified trainers who need a base line of knowledge and skills in order to plan deliver and evaluate learning. All trainers need to have this before they can achieve the higher grades.
The Certificate in Teaching in the Life Long Learning Sector (CTLLS)
Is the next level up, involves a lot more of the theory around teaching and designing complex learning programmes. Achievement of this leads to trainers achieving (Accredited Teacher Learning and Skills Status (ATLS), through registration with the Institute for Learning (IfL).

The Diploma in Teaching in the Life Long Learning Sector (DTLLS)
Is the highest level and leads to the achievement of (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS), through registration with IfL.
Anyone delivering training in funded vocational of FE provision must now be licensed to practice with the IfL, either by having existing trainer qualifications or by achieving these new ones, so best practice dictates that all providers of adult learning should be appropriately qualified and licensed.
What is the definition of a teacher/trainer?
Anyone who provides learning to individuals, such as 1:1 learning, coaching, half-day events, candidate inductions, to full sequential development programmes.

Why must I do this?
Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) the Sector Skills Council for teaching and learning, strongly recommends that unqualified teacher/trainers need to undertake the new ITT qualifications, leading to ATLS/QTLS status, to meet the government’s 2010 deadline. If they are delivering government funded learning then it is mandatory.

How do I start to gain my ITT qualifications?
Your first step is to undertake your PTLLS Award with us at Eastwood Park. This will give you the training and qualification to teach a subject that you have the expertise in. You will then consolidate your practice and experience and within the next 5 years achieve your CTLLS which will lead to your ATLS licence to practice. You can then stop at this level, or if you are a full time trainer, then you may wish to progress to the DTLLS and achieve QTLS status.

How will Eastwood Park Deliver the PTLLS award?
We will provide 3 x two day residential events where you will be taught all the skills and knowledge needed to teach as a new practitioner. You will produce a personal reflective journal, written assignments as well as being assessed delivering a short teaching practice (this happens on the 7th Day). You will then meet with your personal assessor on a 1:1 basis to review your teaching practice and complete assessments via examination of your work and professional discussion. There will also be ongoing support for you via your personal tutor. NB you must attend all 7 days + your final 1:1 assessment as you need to evidence that you have received at least 30 taught hours and undertaken 30 hours of self directed study.
