Who will benefit?
This course has been devised to meet the needs of those undertaking an operation responsibility for medical instrument decontamination within the hospital trust which may include the provision of information/reports at board level.

Aim
To enable delegates to develop an understanding of all types of decontamination equipment, operation and testing, and to understand the need for audit and quality systems and to be able to plan and report on all decontamination operations and strategic planning at board level.

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
  • Assess and evaluate all types of decontamination equipment, in terms of performance, efficacy and ‘fit for purpose’ for all types of medical instrumentation and other re-useable medical devices.
  • Assess and plan for the replacement of equipment/rebuild of a sterile services department, including capital purchase, capacity planning, workflow, strategic planning; including environmental and IC issues/liaison with ICT.
  • Understand the need for periodic testing, validation and quality assurance throughout the process.
  • Assess audit requirements, in line with current guidance on regulations.
  • Implement a staff training programme.

Accreditation
The course has been accredited by the City & Guilds of London Institute.

Other information
Relevant experience or occupational competence in a hospital-based decontamination role is essential.
