Decontamination of Dental Instruments - DDI

Who will benefit?
This course has been designed for:
  • Managers of dental practices who are responsible for the decontamination of dental instruments
  • Dental Nurses, Dental Hygienists, and those involved in the decontamination of dental instruments
The nominated lead member of staff responsible for infection control and decontamination.

Aim
To provide delegates with the necessary knowledge, skills and procedural practices to apply the guidelines of HTM 01-05 and undertake the safe and effective decontamination of dental instruments.

Objectives
On completion of Day 1 and Day 2, delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
  • Explain the difference between cleaning, disinfection and sterilization as defined in the HTM guidance
  • Identify the importance of decontamination in preventing infection
  • Demonstrate competency in the operation of different types of decontamination equipment
  • Discuss washer-disinfectors for different applications relating to dental decontamination
  • Demonstrate an ability to carry out the daily tests/checks required on all decontamination equipment as outlined in HTM 01-05
  • Record the daily test information as required by HTM 01-05.

On completion of Day 3, Managers will be able to:

  • Explain the need for maintaining the equipment log books and test records as detailed in HTM 01-05
  • Be able to read and interpret all test reports in line with current guidance
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the requirements for compliance, in relation to current guidance documents
Be able to audit and assess current practices


Accreditation
Eastwood Park has applied to the City & Guilds of London Institute for course accreditation under the existing decontamination complex.

Other information
Project-based assessments for City & Guilds accreditation will be carried out during the practical sessions.

There is no pre-requisite for this course, although the delegate should be currently working in an environment which includes dental decontamination.
